Merry and Bright - New Mexico Style
The Holidays in New Mexico hold a special magic. All of New Mexico is glowing with traditional luminarias these days. Well, there is the traditional lunch sack version that is primarily used on Christmas eve and the more commercial durable electrified kind that makes it possible for home and business owners to put up a beautiful New Mexican display for the entire season. The traditional luminarias are lunch bags, top folded down, sand in the bottom and a votive candle in each - simple, inexpensive, and somewhat time consuming, but usually a team effort. The result is so charming and inviting. Farolitos are traditionally put up on Christmas eve. They are small bonfires of pinon wood. In Santa Fe you'll find them on the vastly popular and therefore very crowded Canyon Road crawl. The air is also fragrant with the smoke from Pinon wood burning in the fireplaces.
