Ingo Maurer Munich metro stations
In 2009 Ingo Maurer transformed one of Munich’s busiest metro stations, Münchner Freiheit into a vivid experience in color and light. It was quite a transformation!! When I arrived on my annual visit to Ingo Maurer I couldn’t stop taking photos of this wonderful installation close to his studio showroom. The objective of the metro station renovation was to create a new and cheerful light and surface design. And cheerful it is!! Two colors dominate the metro station: A brilliant cobalt blue and bright yellow.
Since this metro station like many others has low ceilings 3,200 silver mirror-finish plates were mounted under the the ceilingto achieve a sense of greater openness. Together with the 204 square fluorescent light boxes they create an interesting play of light.
The walls are yellow and the columns that are tiled in blue are illuminated by LED lamps. Through the mirror reflections in the ceiling they appear statuesque and striking. A muted silver-grey material was used for floors and the rest of the walls.
It took me quite a while to realize what else is different about this metro station: No billboards or signs, vending machines or clutter. And no graffiti!
The Munich metro station Westfriedhof was definitely worth the trip we took there just to see the giant domes by Ingo Maurer. Eleven 150" diameter aluminium domes are suspended over the platform. Their inner surfaces are brightly lacquered in yellow, red and blue. Blue light above the domes wash the ceiling and walls in a magic light.
Team Ingo Maurer is currently working on the Marienplatz metro station. We went through the construction site daily on our way to the hotel. I can't wait to see the finished product next year. This is a photo of the model. Since the ceilings are very low there are no suspended lights, but the ceiling panels are red sheets with imbedded LED modules.
Want the dome in your home? Maybe the size below would work. A fabulous piece for a grand room. We visited with Ingo Maurer when we were at his showroom earlier this month. Always such a treat to meet him.
